BIRDLIFE

The Serengeti diversity program has in record 540 bird species! (3). But, the most fascinating aspect of the Serengeti’s highly diverse wildlife population is that there are “Serengeti Specials’ or bird species endemic to the Serengeti and nowhere else on the planet! (3). These “Serengeti Specials” birds are Schalow’s wheatear, red-throated tit, Rufous-tailed Weaver, grey-crested helmet shrike, and Schalow’s turaco (3). More recognizable birds are the secretary bird, the African fish eagle, Fischer’s lovebird, or countless vulture species (3).

There are also larger birds to keep an eye out for, for instance, you can spot ostriches, southern ground hornbill, kori bustard, and secretary bird and lilac-breasted roller, often seen by the road! (4). Don’t forget that there is also the black eagle soaring above the cliffs at Lobo, or a breeding colony of Jackson’s golden-backed weaver (4).
