WILDLIFE

The Serengeti National Park has a variety of wildlife that vary based on how common they appear in Tanzania’s best park.

The Serengeti National Park has a diverse population of animals that balance the ecosystem (1). You might be familiar with these animals from the famous Disney movie The Lion King (wink). However, these animal populations have been decreasing or are already extinct.

PLAINS

The Serengeti National Park has over 2 million ungulates (hoofed animals), 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 550 cheetahs, and 500 bird species! These animals inhabit an area of nearly 15,000 square kilometers (1).

PREDATORS

The lion, cheetah, and hyena are found in almost all of the Serengeti National Park of all the carnivores (9). The Serengeti National Park 3000 to 4000 individuals of lion, most likely the largest population left in Africa, and hundreds of resident lions wander the plains around Seronera, and the Simba, Moru, and Gol koppies close to the main Ngorongoro road! (9). Leopards, on the other hand, are very exclusive and live in secrecy so it’s harder to keep track of them (10). Their population is approximately 1000 in counting (10). Cheetah makes up an estimation of 500 to 600 in the Serengeti National Park (10). However, the most common species of predators in the Serengeti National Park are the hyenas, who travel in packs and move within the outlands (10). They are more present in the Serengeti National Park than lions! (10).

There are some endangered or even extinct species of predators. The African Wild Dog for example, started to decline from 1970s and completely vanished in 1992 due to disease (14). Luckily, we have a diverse line of African Wild Dogs to keep its legacy going!
